I first started teaching social studies at a special program for inner city high school merit scholars at the University of Chicago. Before that I was a journalist at the Tallahassee Democrat, then later married and moved with my husband to live in Africa. I began teaching social science in Palm beach county and found it very challenging. Finally, I realized my students could not read. So I went back to school and received a master's in reading. This changed everything. I learned the strate
